In a time before the email and text messages, before mobile phones, before landlines even, in 1851 to be exact, the New York and Mississippi Valley Printing Telegraph Company was created in Rochester New York with the goal of organizing one unified telegraph system to unite the country.
By 1856 the New York and Mississippi Valley Printing Telegraph Company was facing stiff competition from the New York & Western Union Telegraph Company and the only alternative was a merger; and so, a new entity bearing the name of the Western Union Telegraph Company came into being.
As Western Union expanded westward, the company enjoyed phenomenal growth, eventually introducing the first stock ticker in 1866 and a money transfer service in 1871. As the 19th century gave way to the 20th century, Western Union continued to expand and began offering the first charge card for consumers in 1914.
Despite continued growth throughout the great wars, by the 1970s and and 80s Western Union was facing declining profits and mounting debts and looking for ways to slim down and streamline its services. By 1987 when Bennet S. LeBow acquired full control of Western Union, the company was mired in bankruptcy proceedings and a new strategy based on financial-transfer services was devised.
Today, Western Union offers financial services from person-to-person money transfers to money orders, business payments and commercial services. With an annual revenue of more than $5,542.0 million, Western Union remains one of the largest players in the financial services industry across the United States, Europe and the rest of the world, despite the discontinuation of the telegram service in 2006.
